1921 W-563 original uncut strip of ten W-series presidential strip cards including Washington, Lincoln & Teddy Roosevelt. Often this type of W-series strip card is individually found in very bad condition (such as out of registration, printed off center, badly faded, badly worn & or damaged, etc., etc.). This series has been identified as having been made by th Universal Toy And Novelty Mfg. Co. in 1921. All of the other cards in this presidential part of the series were issued with two years under their names including first year in office to the last year served. The only exception was Harding who just had the date of 1921 under his name. So, it becomes obvious that this series dates from 1921.
It is very pleasing to offer this intact & uncut strip of ten. The strip measures 14 3/4 inches long by 2 7/16 inches tall. The cards have considerable natural toning from age. The three cards on the right end of the strip are toned more than the other seven cards on the strip & are somewhat dirty. The colors are all in superb registration on the cards. A line with the names of the presidents was originally printed under the images just below the frames of their portraits. Then under the name line the dates of when each of the men was president were printed. In the case of this strip of the ten presidents, which we are offering in this listing, the strip was mis-cut (as made) in the factory.This strip was mis-cut in the factory from a sheet of 100 cards with some of the strips of ten cards comprised of a different subject matter than the other strips. This occurrence created a rare variation in this very interesting, entertaining, & unusual factory error (as made) & shown in this offering. The bottom sections of ten different of another type of cards with their text print lines from the original sheet ended up on the tops of these presidential cards. The text line at the tops of these cards is from a strip of cards that was on the sheet above this strip. The strip of cards above this presidential strip, in this instance, would have all been Charlie Chaplin related cards.So, we have here the very interesting combination of having the portraits of presidents with text from Charlie Chaplin cards above their portraits. In this factory error miscut of the strip the text that would have been below the portraits of the presidents has been deleted is not present because of the factory miscut. This strip is absolutely original as shown & is just as it would have beenwhen it left the original printer(except for toning from age & flaws acquired over the last century since it was made).There are no creases, no folds, no tears, no repairs, & no fading of the colors.The group we are offering in this listing has some considerable brown toning from age. The Warren G, Harding card on the left end of the strip has a thin surface scuff. The Washington card has two corner chips. The Jefferson & Jackson cards each have a couple of nicks off of the bottom edge.This all original 1921 group of ten uncut strip cards has not been tampered with in any way. This strip turned up approximately 25 years ago intact as shown right out of the original confectionary store where it had been sitting untampered with & packed away & unexposed to light since 1921. It has been sequestered in our collection ever since that time.Here is a list of the cards on the strip from right to left starting with the earliest president first. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Abe Lincoln, U.S. Grant, William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding. It is interesting to note that the portrait of George Washington was inspired by the famous unfinished oil painting of Washington done (or should we say almost done?) by Gilbert Stuart.A fascinating historic item now a full century old, ready to travel, after these 25 years or so that we have owned & enjoyed it, to another happy home.Please examine the photos closely & purchase based on your own judgement as to condition & value.
