Vintage Dartmouth College Indian Head cane - ~36" long - with the depiction of the now defunct "Indian" mascot as the handle. This is a 1937, Delta Tau Delta, fraternal cane that was owned by Hank Lullmann. It has well over 20, names, initials and other carvings along the shaft.
The nickname "Indians" for Dartmouth sports teams likely dates into use in the late 19th century, and was probably rooted in the early history of the school, which was founded in 1769 to train Native Americans as missionaries. Created by a student, Charles Dudley, the first Indian head motif canes came into use in 1899 and ingrained themselves as an institution for decades until the early 1960s, when they began to fall out of favor. Friends and classmates typically carved their names into each other's canes, and they would be carried on graduation day. The student union stopped selling the canes in 1963, and by 1974, the Board of Trustees had discontinued any official use of the symbol or nickname.
