Meteorite: NWA Chondrite H 6This meteorite is one of hundreds of new finds that are coming out of the deserts of northwest Africa. They are being found by mostly Bedouin nomads, who then carry them to market centers in Morocco and Tunisia. While most meteorites are named for towns or landmarks near where they are found, any location information for these has been lost. The Meteorite Nomenclature Committee has declared that meteorites found in this manner should be given the name NWA (North West Africa). If a stone is analyzed and given a classification, a number is appended to the NWA showing the order in which it was analyzed. Unfortunately, so many of these meteorites are coming out that the backlog for analysis has become unmanageable. Scientists are now concentrating on the rare and unusual types, leaving the more numerous chondrites un-analyzed. While most people think of irons when meteorites are mentioned, the stoneys actually make up the vast majority of what actually falls to Earth (over 90%). The early solar system was originally composed of a cloud of gas and dust that began to contract. As it contracted, particles began to bump against one another and stick. Over time these small clumps grew from microscopic to a few millimeters in size, and began to be subjected to static electric discharges which melted them and they would cool into small spheroids know as chondrules. The chondules continued to coalesce, forming larger bodies, including the planets and asteroids. Chondirtes have asteroids as their parent bodies. All chondrites are composed mainly of a form of silica (hypersthene bronzite). However, they are broken down into three subtypes: ‘H’ for those with a high amount of iron-nickel (up to 20% by weight); ‘L’ for those with a lower amount of iron-nickel; and ‘LL’ for those with a very low iron-nickel content. Chondrules can undergo further melting by the high pressures, which can exist inside the parent asteroid. The amount of melting they undergo is given a number from 3 (no melting) to 7 (completely melted). This is called the Petrographic Grade. This one has an incredible fused coating!
