GREEK BYZANTINE ICON - "THEOTOKOS" Mother of God950 SILVER SETTING - Highest Quality

EXCELLENT vintage condition - Absolutely beautiful.
Overlay setting is marked "950 Silver" purity (see photo).
The hand-applied intricate relief setting adds wonderful depth & dimension to the piece.
Notice the thickness of the chasing & repousse' setting which fits securely & snugly to the portrait with no sharp edges. Lovely!
The portrait of the Madonna & Child, although a copy from the Byzantine Museum, is an authentic painting worked on canvas.
Greek letters "IC XC" seen right of the infant are shorthand for "Jesus Christ" in Greek.
Greek letters "MP" & "OY" short for "MHTHP OEOY" placed at the left & right of the head of the Virgin Mary are transliterated "Meter Theou" or "Mother of God".
Greek letters "HAMOAYN TOC" translated as "Most Holy One and Immaculate".
CὬΝ around Jesus Halo interpreted as "He who is".
The black frame is a composite material - not real wood.
Hanging loop is attached to the back which lays flat for easel display.
Approx measurements : 7" high x 5.5" wide x .75" depth.
Greek to English translations are to the best of my knowledge.

This stunning Greek Byzantine THEOTOKOS or "Mother of God" icon features a genuine hand-painted portrait set in a beautiful 950 silver setting that measures 7" tall by 5.5" wide x 3/4" thick with attached hanging loop.
Notice the beautiful hands, flowing drapery, & patterned halo. A particularly interesting feature of this icon is, like most toddlers at some point, Jesus seems to be losing one of His sandals. Remarkable human touch for such a sacred image.
The "Mother of God" is seen gazing directly at the viewer with a somber expressionshowing great love & careas She tenderly embraces the toddler Jesus. He is seen gazing outward over His left shoulder with an adult-child like face.
Surrounding the arched image of Mother & Infant is beautiful scroll work, a pair of peacocks & a dove (representing immortality & love according to Greek mythos).
The vocation for the viewer is that we hold Christ in our hearts as She holds Him in Her arms.
