Abenaki Northeast Woodlands Basket Braided Cord Dyed Splint Antique VintageDescription and Item Information
Up for sale is this antique or vintage Northeast Woodlands woodsplint basket. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This fancy basket is made from dyed ash splints and braided cord which is either Hong Kong cord or sweetgrass (I do not know the exact composition of the cord). This item measures approximately 6 1/8 inches tall and it is about 8 inches long and 7 1/2 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs 5.2 ounces. This would be a wonderful addition to a collection of country primitive antiques.Identification
This unsigned basket is believed to be Abenaki, indigenous to the Northeastern Woodlands of Canada or the United States. A basket made with similar techniques is shown on page 128 of the reference entitled, Indian Basketry of the Northeastern Woodlands by Sarah Peabody Turnbaugh and William A. Turnbaugh. The example in the book is circa 1940s, but the exact age of the piece I am selling is unknown. This item is from a northern California collection of country primitives, folk art, and antiques.Condition
The basket looks good overall, with light wear from use. It is unknown whether it once had a lid, but it is does not have a lid. There are a few small losses and breaks in the splint material, mostly on the bottom. The dyed splints have faded. I have not cleaned the basket, and it is dusty, with light soiling. There are no foul odors. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to offerding or buying.Terms of Sale1. Payments
