This Enameled Russian Tsarist Corination Cup belonged to my Grandmother who passed away in 1966 in her 80\'s. Her family brought it with them when they emigrated to the US in 1900. The cup you are buying has been in our family since then. I have photographed all four sides and the inside & bottom for an accurate assessment.

This Russian Enamel Cup has an interesting and sad history, which is included down below. Originally designed for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, it became known as the Khodynka \"Cup of Sorrows\". The cup bears the ciphers of Nicholas and Alexandra surrounded by a geometric pattern with the Romanov Eagle on the opposite side with the date 1896. In the photographs you can see there is only one small chip in the enamel around the lip and the bottom & inside are relatively chip free. There are no restorations. The cup measures approximately 4.125 inches tall by 3.75 inches in diameter. It was always well taken care of and spent most of it\'s life in my grandmothers china cabinet.

The cup is among many that were distributed along with food presents and commemorative scarves to celebrate the coronation of Nicholas II as it had been a long-standing tradition. On the morning of May 18, 1896, over half a million revelers gathered on the ragged Khodynka Field in Moscow in anticipation of the presents and especially the commemorative cups as enameled tableware was still a great novelty at the time. That was far more than the field could safely accommodate, especially considering the many trenches and pits that dotted the plain in front of the Czar\'s podium as the entire area was normally used as a military training ground. A rumor swept through the crowd that the cups contained a gold coin. In the resulting confusion a stampede ensued and over a thousand people were trampled to death. Subsequently the planned celebration became known as the Khodynka Tragedy. The tragedy was ultimately taken as an omen of things to come for the rest of Nicholas\' reign. The coronation cup became known in Russia as the \"Cup of Sorrows\" and the Czar himself got the nickname of \"Bloody Nicholas\" - despite his best efforts to compensate the families of the victims. It was actually the Tsarina who named it the \"cup of sorrows.\"

This cup is a genuine piece of history and is absolutely guaranteed an original period piece. The cup has been in our family for at least 125 years.
