An Eastern Woodland, Native-American, ash splint basket, probably Penobscot tribe of Maine, certainly antique, late 19th or early 20th century. It measures 10 15/8\" square by 4\" tall, with the splints died three different colors, and with an overall pattern of stencil-painted florettes. It is in an exceptional state of preservation, with no breaks, stain and paint still vivid, and a fine darkened surface, showing its age very appealingly. I\'ve dealt in thousands of baskets during my many decades in the trade. This is one of the very few that, given form, decoration and condition, I am comfortable referring to as museum quality. It is certainly the loveliest and best preserved of this type of basket I have ever handled.
