Crested China, also knownas Heraldic China or Crested Ware, are small glazed porcelain ornaments, madein the United Kingdom, from the mid-19th century to the beginning ofWWII. They were sold in the seasidetowns, to tourists and visitors as souvenirs, small pieces of china thatcarried the heraldic crest or coat-of-arms of the town. Beginning with figurines ofeveryday objects, busts of famous people, local museum antiquities or everydayitems like pitchers, tankards, teapots, baskets, kettles, dogs and cats, thetiny replicas were immensely popular with visitors. The outbreak of World War I brought about newdesigns with a war-based theme that included weapons, ammunition, grenades,ships, planes and tanks among others. The range of military subjects was large,with the accuracy of depiction less important than the appeal of the piece; infact, some “crests” were created by the pottery artists of the companies thatproduced them such as Carlton, Arcadian, Shelley, Goss, Swan, Willow Art andGrafton, the majority of which were clustered around Stoke-on-Trent inEngland.
