Elegant bookends in the form of a kneeling nude, arms stretched out before her. This is modeled after Fayral's "Ecstasy," a very popular set of bookends produced in the 1920s by La Verrier of France.This is the first time I've seen this set outside the reference books.Bronze-clad, a manufacturing process by which a skin of bronze was deposited on a plaster form through electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel, and heft of solid bronze yet were affordable by the middle class.
No maker's mark but the green of her skirt tells me this was by Pompeian Bronze, which operated in NYC in the 1920s.
Condition is excellent. No breaks in the cladding, just a single ding on one thigh (pictured). Otherwise, nothing bent, no mashed corners on the bases. Finish is original, some wear and spotting to the gold paint and the white paint of her skirt has chipped away, but mostly the finish is intact and attractive. Both pieces sit flat and stable.
6 1/4 inches tall; base is 4 inches X 2 3/4 inches. Combined weight is 3 3/4 pounds.
