Shall we begin? I've had this pipe for a while now. For reasons still unknown to me, I just kept telling myself: "I'll post it tomorrow". That's been going on for quite a while. Maybe I was seduced by its beauty, maybe I find it hard to actually sell it to anyone, who knows. To begin with stamping, it's a Svend Bang pipe, old pre-1984 Copenhagen handmade piece. Grade A, sitting in higher middle which is obvious by one side being in perfect straight grain, while other has less of it. Now, although it's an A, I bet you've never seen a Bang Freehand so far. That's the first detail that makes it special. Its size would be next interesting detail. Large size bowl with very thick walls and a longer stem with massive saddle part. Of course, stem was hand cut to finest detail. Svend wasn't delighter with the fact that hand cutting mouthpieces took so much time, however his young pipemakers were set on meticulous, complete handwork in every aspect and using the very best materials exclusively. This brings us to another point, it remains unknown who actually made this pipe, since neither Per Hansen nor Ulf Noltensmeier stamped their names on pipes. If I had to guess based on similarities, I would say this pipe was made by Ulf.To talk about the specifics a bit. Pipe has a flat bottom and when sitting like that, bowl leans forward with its sprouting profile, while shank and stem are raised high in a strong bend. Plateau top was painted in black and frontal and back side represent thickness of briar itself. Shank is slim, nicely curved and raised. Stem has an angled saddle part, massive as I've already said. Then comes the diamond widening before paneled finish towards the end. Pipe is of course, unfiltered. There's a small dent on frontal side of the bowl, close to bottom. It's visible on photo where pipe lays upside down. Chamber is like new. Top part was untouched, while bottom part has some light coloring from a single smoke. Our luxurious velvet sleeve was tailored to fit this pipe.
It's a beautiful pipe, just wonderful. It would be located below 2k pricewise, but this is a unique Freehand with plateau top, I've never seen a single Bang like this. Famous Copenhagen era, higher grade. It all makes this pipe a worthy collectible item.
