BRIGHAM YOUNG HOMES \" LION HOUSE & BEE HIVE HOUSE \" 1875 PHOTO by C. R. SAVAGE:
$225.00

We are offering a RARE 1875 Charles R. Savage boudoir-size albumen photograph (5 1/4\" x 8 1/2\") of Brigham Young\'s residences in Salt Lake City - Lion House and Bee Hive House. Posed in front of the homes are 4 young children, most likely Young\'s children, as he fathered 57 children, the last of whom was born in 1870 when he was 68 years old. A horse drawn carriage carrying two men, whom we assume are members of the Young family, is stopped in the road in front of the homes. Printed on the back is \"C. R. Savage, Art Bazar, Salt Lake City, Utah\".
**History of the houses: The Bee Hive House was built in 1854 for Church of the Latter Day Saints President Brigham Young, who was also the first territorial governor of Utah. The Bee Hive House was where he conducted the business of govenorship, as well as serving as his residence. In 1856, Lion House was built to house the large number of Young\'s family members. Before he died, Brigham Young deeded Bee Hive House to Lucy Decker Young, his first plural wife. In 1900 Young\'s successor as president, Lorenzo Snow occupied it; and later President Joseph Smith lived in the house until 1918. Shortly after, Bee Hive House became a boarding house for single working women of the Church of the Latter Day Saints. Lion House was turned into a social center for young women of the church. Today the Bee Hive House is a landmark visitor attraction, and the Lion House is a restaurant and reception center.
** NOTE** We believe this photo to be rare as we have not seen another like it - there are other photos of just the houses (without the family members), and most of these are digital copies ** According to the Brigham Young University Library website: Charles R. Savage\'s studio and gallery, \"Art Bazar\", burned to the ground in 1883, with all of his negatives. After his death, another fire in 1911 destroyed all of the negatives from the last 25 years of his career. The university library has a collection of Savage\'s original photos of Salt Lake City, Brigham Young and other church leaders, and other photos related to the church.
