The Benz Bz IV was a German aircraft engine built by the former Benz & Cie. company in Mannheim, Germany, which was primarily used in the military aircraft of World War I

The in-line engine Bz IV was designed by Arthur Berger in 1915 as the successor to the Bz IIIa. It differed from the latter in that the displacement was increased by 30% and multi-valve technology with two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder (four-valve engine). In addition, two lower (OHV valve timing) camshafts and two carburettors were used. In February 1916 it passed the BA (construction type) test and went into series production in the same year. By 1918, a minimum of 6,400 to a maximum of 7,000 units had been produced, which were mainly used in the German C-types (two-seater aircraft armed with machine guns, mostly reconnaissance aircraft) and were characterized by high reliability. The world\'s first mass-produced all-metal aircraft, the Junkers J.I, was also equipped with a Bz IV.
