$245.00

JOSIAH QUINCY III (1772 – 1864) was an American statesman, educator, second mayor of Boston, President of Harvard University and author of “The History of Harvard University.” He has been ranked as one of the top best mayors in American history.

2 pp, 7 7/8 x 9 ½, ALS to United States Associate Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story from Cambridge, MA, February 5, 1830. Quincy writes a humorous letter regarding the poor mail service in his area and his discussion with the mail contractor.

“I have done what I could to cooperate with your efforts to facilitate the mail to this place, and according to your suggestion, saw the contractor...who engaged solemnly he would carry it most disastrously cheap for the sake of the vicinity, which he had a most intense zeal to gratify. Now the degree in which the words of this benevolent publican will coincide with his deeds, time, which disproves all things, will unfold. I cannot question, however, that there is not a contractor within the ten miles square with a more tender regard for the intercepts of the public, than he of this humble village. ‘Quite indefensible’ – my dear Sir, as you express it. Why I do not know but he will do it for the very pleasure of carrying it...Be assured, therefore, if there be any truth in man, the project will not fail by reason of his want of sympathy and self-denial.

“...Present me with sentiments of the most perfect respect to your friend the Chief Justice to whom is applicable as truly as ever it was to Lord Mansfield the lines of the Latin Pact....

“Your friend

“Josiah Quincy”
