Bradley and Hubbard Manufacturing Co.

Bradley & Hubbard began in Meriden, Connecticut as a partnership ofNathaniel Bradley and Walter Hubbard in 1854. Initially they produceddecorative clocks, vases, mirrors and other decorative metal objects. Bythe 1860s they began to produce lamps ... oil, gas, kerosene and eventuallyelectric lamps. Bradley & Hubbard were best known for their bookends andlamps but their other products included chandeliers, candelabras and clocks(with movements often by Ansonia)...and produced among the world\'s finest metal wares of the late 19th/early 20thcentury. They seldom worked inbronze but their work is consistently mistaken for bronze, even byknowledgeable dealers. The height of the Bradley & Hubbardfoundry\'s business was 1854-1920. B&H products are always excellentexamples of their genres and consistentlycommand higher prices thanthose of their closest competitors (like Chase, JenningsBros, ConnecticutFoundry, LVAronson, etc.). Further, their values are escalating significantly faster thancomparable pieces.

Item Description: This item isfor (1) one Bradley & Hubbard free standing cigarette or match box holdermade sometime around the years of 1913 through 1920.

Reynolds Tobacco established virtuallyevery packaging standard in the U.S. cigarette industry. The 20-cigarette packwas introduced by Reynolds Tobacco in1913 and many manufacturersstarted making accessories to accommodate smokers. Cigarette cases, ashtrayswith cigarette channels appeared, and of course cigarette package and match boxholders. B & H sold these free standing accessories in paired boxes sothere were pairs sitting on tables beside locations where cigarette, cigars,and pipes were smoked. This holder is weighted on a round base and is adornedwith a solid brass holder whereas half was electroplated with a copper finish.The base outmost round rim is brass and the narrow inner band is copper withthe larger ring area is electroplated with a bluish black pearl alloy combination ofelectroplating that was used on some bookends. The holder is attached to thebase with one single slotted screw driver bolt.

This item is in very nice condition with some thinning of thecopper plating. There are no broken, bent or missing parts.
