We are offering an original painting by Harry B. Baker, with his signature "H. B. Baker" on the backing. Printed below his signature is "Harry Brown Baker (1868-1941)" and "Frank Alva Parsons New School".Original frame, with glass and original backing.(14 1/2 x 19 1/2. Frame 18 1/2 x 23 1/2)The painting, which we believe was done around the turn of the last century, depicts a cowboy of the American West rolling a cigarette. The painting appears to have been done in gouache paint - slightly thicker in some spots for a more striking effect, and thinner in other places almost appearing as watercolors. It has a slightly impressionistic look when viewed up closely, and a more realistic look when viewed from further away. The cowboy, having already poured tobacco from the pouch onto the cigarette paper, is holding the pouch by the string between his teeth, to free up his other hand for rolling. How many times have we seen this act performed in western movies?
**SOME INFORMATION ON H. B. BAKER (1868-1941) - A native of West Virginia, Baker moved out west as a young man where he married in 1897 and moved to Oklahoma City in the heart of the Oklahoma Indian Territory. Believed to be self-taught, he painted cowboys and Native Americans in Oklahoma which he sold as illustrations for popular adventure stories about life in the west. Baker studied art in Paris for two years (1904-1906), then studied at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (which later became Parsons School of Design), after which he was hired by Frank Alva Parsons to teach art at the school.
