Civil War South Carolina Officers hat.

The items in listing to include the South Carolina Officers hat with papers shown and other items labeled by past family members to be kept with hat to include a sword, pocket watch and snuff case.

Please use photos for description and evaluation, some photos make the hat appear lighter in areas due to flash and lighting, the hat has darker discoloration’s present.

The hat is not in a crumble state and can be handled with care, please use photos for the description of condition and for your evaluation.

The hat is in fair condition and has stains throughout, holes throughout, abrasions, corrosion on brim clip, discolorations, the felt is rigid and cracked in areas with separations , the hat has mold spot discoloration in areas, the South Carolina insignia has discoloration and is frayed, the hat cord is faded but nice condition.

Please examine photos closely for condition and please request additional photo angles if needed.

The sword is a French Import Officer’s Sword, the sword has patina and corrosion areas throughout, the sword is tight and fish skin grip intact.

The snuff case is dated 1860 and in beautiful condition with paper lining present, the hinge is solid and closes tightly.

The pocket watch is a Waltham model made in Massachusetts and it is a heavy well made watch that is in running condition and includes winding key.

The documents are enclosed in an old envelope from Charleston South Carolina, the contents includes a letter dated 1860 stamped Charleston S.C. Addressed to Capt, and the remaining is not legible.

The letter is very difficult to read at best and makes reference to Richmond Virginia and Gordonsville Virginia, inquiring about family, lack of horses, transportation.

Enclosed also in the paperwork is an envelope from Historian General of the Children of the Confederacy from Stone Mountain Georgia dated September 19, 1970 with a Children’s of the Confederacy Certificate to name Henry A. Cunningham of Company “B” 4th S.C. Cavalry dated 1922.

I have attempted to research for additional information on the 4Th South Carolina Cavalry but end up with dead ends or vague possibilities as the 4Th Cavalry was made up of consolidating the 10Th and 12Th Cavalry in 1862 and records being scarcely documented, lost, missing or records damaged by a military records fire that occurred.

I have no further information on the snuff case, pocket watch and sword in the grouping besides the notations on items from past family members to be kept together with this hat and the paperwork.

The documents are very fragile but can be handled with care.
