Elihu Root Sec of State Nobelist SIGNED notice 1878 Brooklyn Bridge Edgar Cullen:

A legal document called a Notice of Appearance SIGNED by Elihu Root in 1878. The notice measures about 8" x 6 1/2". It is preprinted form, filled in and edited in pen and signed in ink by Root. In 1878, before his storied career in government and world diplomacy, Root was a financial lawyer with an office at 110 Broadway. In this case, the Trustees of the New York & Brooklyn Bridge sued The American Bridge Company to collect on a promissory note for $656.68. At the time, the Brooklyn Bridge was under construction; it would not be completed until 1883. The original summons & complaint from the case are also included. The complaint was signed by Edgar M. Cullen (1843-1922), who would become famous in his own right as an Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals (the highest court of New York State, equivalent to the Supreme Court in other states) from 1900-1904 and the Court of Appeals' Chief Judge from 1904-1913.
