CRAVEN, Elizabeth, styled Margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Autograph Letter Signed ‘Eliz-’, to Mrs. Sloper, assuring her that “if it was not for plagues & head ache you wd have seen me”, but “I know nothing of yr Parasol - unless the one I send is yrs - & if it is mine Pray keep it for my sake.” 1 page 9 x 7 inches, with the address leaf, light creasing, small tear at seal opening. c.1813 according to a later annotation. Uncommon. Elizabeth Craven (née Lady Elizabeth Berkeley) (1750-1828), Princess Berkeley (though styled Margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach), author, playwright, traveller, and socialite, perhaps best known for her travel books (such as A Journey through the Crimea to Constantinople, 1789). She knew Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, and became a close friend of Horace Walpole, who published her early works. Her life gave rise to much scandal. In 1791 she married Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach and Bayreuth. They settled in England, living in Hammersmith and Benham Park in Berkshire.
