Fernando Wood (1812-1881)was an American politician of the Democratic Party and the3-termMayor of New York City (1855-58, 1861 and 1862). He also served multiple terms as a United States Representative, including during theU.S. Civil War (1863-65), one of the leaders of theTammany Hall political machine, opposed the 13th Amendment, supported the Confederate States, and he stronglysuggested that New York City secede from the Union,and declare itself a free city, in order to continue the profitable cotton trade which the Mayor needed to support the New York City patronage system. #11081
