On October 30, 1981 Watergate mastermind G Gordon Liddy and Counter Culture icon Timothy Leary appeared onstage at Austin’s Municipal Auditorium for “ The Great Debate”. The appearance was part of a nationwide tour of a series of public political debates. Their debates also served as materiel for the 1982 documentary “Return Engagement. Opened in 1958, the Villa Capri Restaurant and Hotel was located on the off skirts of the University of Texas campus. It was home away from home to a generation of historical figures, politicians, journalists, and many distinguished speakers who visited and spoke at UT.
Although purely speculative, it seems likely that Liddy stayed at the Villa Capri while visiting Austin for this debate. This document is an important piece of the history of the Watergate scandal, the Counter Culture as well as Austin, Texas and the University of Texas.
