Slated for Lincoln’s signature and ultimately signed and executed by Andrew Johnson following Lincoln's assassination's 5 days earlier, SIGNATURIST-INK is proud to offer a remarkable historical artifact – the remains of GEORGE CUSTER’s personal copy of his promotion to the rank of BREVET MAJOR GENERAL, authentically signed by President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton.The Custer military promotion originates from the estate of Margaret Flood, Elizabeth Custer’s trusted live-in companion and caretaker.

In the post-Lincoln assassination chaos of April 1865, it would be 5 days until President ANDREW JOHNSON and EDWIN M. STANTON finally set pen to paper on April 20, in the midst of the country’s manhunt for Lincoln’s killer. As noted within, the promotion does “hereby confer on [George] A. Custer the rank of Major General By Brevet” for his “meritorious services at the Battles of Winchester and Fisher Hill, Va." and is authentically signed by both Johnson as President at the conclusion, and countersigned by Stanton as Secretary of War.

As was customary at the time, Elizabeth Custer had a personal caretaker and live-in housekeeper named Margaret Flood. Margaret and Elizabeth were extremely close, and Margaret lived with Libbie. Eventually, Margaret married and she and her husband Patrick lived with Libbie until her death at the age of 90 in 1933.

The Andrew Johnson and Edwin M. Stanton signatures have been reviewed and CERTIFIED AUTHENTIC BY PSA/DNA EXPERT EXAMINATION. Condition is as shown. In the ensuing years, rodents caused significant, irreparable damage to the priceless folded document while in storage, which is shown as found in three remaining pieces and framed to an overall dimension of 16" x 20".

The vellum document is overlaid atop a reproduction military promotion, and suspended between two sheets of museum-grade UV-acrylic to prevent further damage. It is the only Custer promotion in private hands, and not in a museum or part of the National Park Service.
