Germany: Brunswick Commemorative Medal for the FirstSchleswig War 1848-1849. Very rare bronze medal awarded to surviving members ofthe regiment fielded by the Duchy of Brunswick in the first war against Denmark1848-49. However, the medal was not established until 1891, and then could onlybe claimed by surviving veterans; consequently, of approximately 3,000Brunswick combatants, only 426 medals were awarded. The “W” on the obversestands for Wilhelm August Ludwig Maximilian Friedrich, Duke of Brunswick duringthe war. The engraver’s initials, “C.F.”, appear on the obverse below thewreath. The medal is in extremely finecondition, on the original ribbon.
