The origin of the \"Death Mask\" of John Dillinger has been discussed by many over the years and copies are still found at sales. There are actually two FBI reports on this matter revealing the facts surrounding obtaining the mask. The FBI received one original of two made at the morgue and this mask was shipped by the Reliance Dental Manufacturing Company in January, 1935. These facts , and more, are revealed in two reports; one by SA Deveraux and one by SA Sackett.

Limited edition second generation plaster death mask of John Dillinger, #6/100, approximately 9.75 x 6, created from a mold of the original death mask. The highly detailed mask is signed on the reverse in the mold by Larry McComb. In fine condition.

The day after Dillinger was killed, over a thousand people lined up at the Chicago city morgue to view the mortal remains of the notorious desperado. While his body was on display, it is believed that four death masks were made of the famous face with varying degrees of cooperation from the authorities. This limited edition mask was created from one of those original four. This highly detailed piece captures the outlaw as he lay on that final day of viewing: an extraordinary addition to any gangster collection.

Just 12 hours after Dillinger’s death on July 22, 1934, Harold May of the Reliance Dental Manufacturing Co. created this death mask of Dillinger’s face at the Cook County Morgue in Chicago to demonstrate the quality of the company’s plaster. People sought to remember the deceased in many ways, but death masks were uncommon at this point in history.

Although the creation of a death mask seems bizarre, the FBI case files describe an even stranger scene at the morgue: “Every politician and his friend in Chicago crowded into the morgue for the moroffer purpose of viewing Dillinger’s remains....[G]reat confusion existed at the morgue [for] several days, inasmuch as there were thousands of people who attempted to gain admission to view Dillinger’s body.”

Police departments across the country asked the FBI for copies of the death mask. The FBI denied the requests after determining that providing copies would result in a “tremendous burden.” However, the FBI decided to permit officers to cast their own copies from the original while attending the newly created FBI National Academy, which still exists today. FBI National Academy attendees cast molds as part of forensic modeling studies for many years.
