Here is a rare partial skeleton of a Mesosaurus Braziliensis, an ancient aquatic reptile from the Permian, between 279 and 290 million years ago. Before the first dinosaurs. From southern Brazil. Other Mesosaurus fossils have been found in Uruguay, Namibia and South Africa. Which makes sense, because Africa and South America did not split until much later, about 140 million years ago.
The name Mesosaurus in Greek means \"middle lizard\" because it had features of both reptiles and amphibians. They likely were very adept swimming in marine environments.
The plate is about 9.1 inches by 6.5 inches at the longest measurements (varies), and it weighs 1 lb. 15.1 oz.
This is not a common fossil, and we heard that the main area for excavation is closed. Do not confuse this with a Keichosaurus, or Mosasaurus. Big difference in rarity and price.
