- 1888 Improved Order of Red Men LITHOGRAPH in Color -- “Freedom T.O.T.E. Friendship & Charity” / “OUR TOTEM” -- Depicting Various Scenes of Native American Indian Life -

Completely original and genuine Improved Order of Red Men CHROMOLITHOGRAPH in color, with the words “Freedom T.O.T.E. Friendship & Charity” printed along the top and “OUR TOTEM” printed along the bottom. Lithograph measures about 22 x 28 inches in size and has some additional printed information as follows – Copyright, 1888 By Frank W. Parkhurst of Boston, Mass / T. C. Savory, Del. / G. H. Buek & Co. Lith. N.Y.

Lithograph is wonderfully illustrated with a bald eagle along the top clutching a banner with his beak, which is suspended between the American flag and another flag. The lithograph has eight smaller historical vignettes (Boston Tea Party, landing of the Pilgrims, and others) surrounding a larger vignette in the center, all depicting scenes of native American Indian life.

IMPROVED ORDER OF RED MEN was a fraternal organization founded in 1834 in Baltimore, Maryland. The group was inspired by our native American Indians and was modeled after the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Freemasonry. The Red Men had national and state organizational structures that oversaw local units called “Tribes”, that were presided over by a “Sachem” and who met at sites called “Wigwams”. The Red Men practiced rituals that were based on romanticized views of American Indian life and legends.

PLEASE NOTE: the lithograph has quite of bit of gilt or bright gold coloring which does not show up on many of the scans. However, if you refer to several of latter scans, you can get a better perspective of the gold overlay on the litho.

CONDITION: as stated, lithograph measures about 22 x 28 inches in size and is in fine original condition with rich, vibrant coloring. Lithograph appears to be printed on somewhat of a textured paper, almost canvas like material. There is some light, uniform toning overall with a more circular toning spot in the upper left border of the lithograph. There are NO rips / tears or other issues to note. This is a remarkably well-preserved lithographic print from that time period. It was removed by me from its original frame about 20 years ago (see SCANS). Winning buyer to pay $50 for shipping, postage & INSURANCE. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. PLEASE READ: I have been buying + selling American historical autographs & documents for over 40 years and a former member of both the “Manuscript Society” and the UACC. Packages are shipped out within 1 – 3 business days, but typically the next day. Please understand, we do not make any money on shipping costs, but rather run a deficit over the course of a year. Most buyers don’t realize that charges me a 13.3 percent FEE on the item sold, an additional 13.3 percent FEE on my quoted shipping charges, and another 13.3 percent FEE on the sales tax that collects on the item. Everything we sell is packaged with the utmost care. Please read my response over the last 25 years. The comments are often – the best packaging I have ever seen or “bullet proof” packaging. We do NOT offer returns for one simple reason. In the past, I have had some buyers purchase items from me and then proceed to shop them around during the return period to try and make a fast profit, without any financial risk. After they were unsuccessful, they returned the item to me. This information, however, made it back to me from different people I know who were directly offered my item immediately after I had sold it and before it was returned to me for a refund. offer with confidence! You will receive the exact item pictured and in the same condition as described in my listing.
