This is an Outstanding EstateFresh old Hopi Kachina Doll from a longtime collector of Native American Art, Kachina\'s Rugs Pottery and other NA items. This accumulation was just amazing and I was lucky enough to buy several pieces. This piece is anOUTSTANDING HAND CARVED 9\" HOPI OWL KACHINA DOLL by FAMOUS CARVER and MENTOR CLYDE HONYOUTI. It is in very good condition as described above. This piece is marked on the bottom with the carvers name C. (Clyde) Honyouti ofHotevilla, Arizona on the Hopi Reservation. The colors and the detail are amazing and all the carved clothing with the carved feathers, just make this Kachina stunning. Clyde Honyouti is the father of well-known carving brothers,Ronald, Brian, and Lauren Honyouti and the grandfather of the world famous master carver Mavasta Honyouti. Hisinfluence has guided his sons and grandson in becoming some of the most talented andwell-known contemporary kachina carvers today. It was in the early days whilehearding sheep that Clyde would pick up a single piece of wood and widdle awayat it until a figure was brought to life. This evolved for the Honyouti familyinto their current \"one-piece\" masterpieces. Most of Clyde\'s work is privately held andsubsequently not available for sale. This represents one of the few pieces thatare available and would make an excellent addition to any Honyouti collection.

Central to Hopi religion, Kachinas are supernatural beingsbelieved to live on the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, Arizona. Hopimenembody theKachina spirits during ceremonies that take placebetween Winter Solstice and mid-July. The Hopis believe these spirits enablethem to live in harmony with nature, ensuring rain, crops, fertility, and goodhunting. The Hopi men impersonate these kachinas by wearing masks and dancingin the plazas of the villages. The dolls, which are carved replicas of thedancers, are given to the children so that they may learn about their people\'straditions. The art of carving kachina dolls has evolved from the old-styleblocklike figures into today\'s highly detailed, all-wood dolls with realisticform and action. Traditional, or Old-Style, Kachina Dolls were simple carvingsgiven to Hopi children to teach them about their culture and the Kachinas thatwould be visiting during the upcoming ceremony. Over time, Kachina Dolls becamemore and more sophisticated and included bases for the dolls to stand on andshowing the Kachina in “action”- such as dancing or hunting. All Kachina Dollsare carved out of the root of the Cottonwood tree. The Cottonwood tree’svigorous roots travel far and deep in search of water. There is spiritualimportance in this fact, as the Hopis are dry farmers in an arid part ofArizona and the search for water is of critical importance to their culture.
