Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday: a Peterson Kinsale, but not just any Kinsale. Those familiar with the modern version of the line may wonder why this one looks a little different to those that they’re used to. After all, contemporary Kinsales bear a much darker stain, more like the chestnut Heritage finish. But this wasn’t always the case; originally, the Kinsale was a lighter hue, as this one is. I estimate that this is from the early days of the Kinsale line, introduced at the turn of the millennium during what is known as Peterson’s ‘Dublin Era.’ I personally like this one better than the Kinsale’s subsequent iterations, but we all have our preferences.

The condition is very good. There’s a little rim darkening and there are some minor blemishes in the finish, but as Kinsales are made from leftover stummels that would otherwise be Sherlock Holmes pipes, this is to be expected as concerns the latter. I imagine Peterson collectors won’t be too 6″ / 152.4mm
