The Major Assault RAF cover signed WWII Fighter Wing Commander Terence Kane

Cover produced for the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Cover depicts two staffeln of Heinkels bombing RAF Biggin Hill 31 August 1940, a Dornier DO215 of 4/aufklarungsgruppe 121 shot down by 66 Squadron off the Norfolk coast 30 August 1940 and RAF Hornchurch under attack with Spitfires of 54 Squadron in trouble.
Cover besrs 20p George Cross gallantry stamp cancelled on First Day of Issue at Biggin Hill Westerham.
Cover has been flown from RAF Wattisham in Lancaster \'City of Lincoln\' of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to join up with the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Flypast over the Lea Valley and then to London flying along the Mall over Buckingham Palace and on to RAF Abingdon where it left the fomration and landed at RAF Lyneham.

Born on September 9 1920 at Maida Vale, London, Kane was educated at various schools, finishing at Varndean County Grammar School, Brighton. After leaving school, he went to work as a junior clerk with a firm of stock jobbers in the City.
On July 25 1938 Kane joined the RAF on a short service commission and began his ab initio course at 3 E&RFTS, Hamble, moving on to 5 FTS, Sealand in late September. During his flying training he was injured in an Audax crash and admitted to hospital, and once discharged completed his advanced training at 10 FTS, Tern Hill.
With the course completed, he was posted to CFS, Upavon, for an instructor\'s course, after which he joined the staff at 14 FTS, Kinloss and later Cranfield. Kane went to 7 OTU, Hawarden in July 1940, converted to Spitfires and joined 234 Squadron at St Eval on September 14. He shared in the destruction of a Ju 88 on the 22nd.
The next day Kane failed to return from a routine section patrol. His Spitfire, R 6896, was damaged in combat off the French coast and he baled out at 6,000 feet and was picked up from the sea and captured by the Germans. His aircraft crashed into the Channel. Before being shot down, Kane destroyed a Bf 109.
He was detained in several prisoner of war camps, including Stalag Luft III (POW No 63). He was freed in May 1945 and stayed in the RAF until 1950, when he went on to the RAFO. He rejoined the RAF in April 1954, serving in the Fighter Control Branch, and retired on May 29 1974 as a Wing Commander.
