Otto Piper(1841–1921) was aGermanarchitectural historianwho, with August von Cohausen (1812–1896), is regarded as one of the two founders ofscientific research intocastles. Otto Piper was born on 22December 1841 inRöckwitz, the youngest of five children ofthe Evangelical pastor, Wilhelm Piper (1806–1873), and his wife, Julie, néeMercker (1818–1888). He was born at Röckwitz nearStavenhageninPrussia. He attended the grammar school inNeubrandenburgfrom 1851 to 1862 and passed hisAbiturin 1862, coming top of his class. During histime at Neubrandenburg, about which he later wrote as part of his schoolrecollections, he metFritz Reuter, Johannes Schondorf and otherpeople in Reuter's circle of friends. After studyinglawatMunich,Berlinand, from May 1864,Rostock,where he received adoctoratein 1873 (Dr. jur.), Piper initially worked as alawyer in Rostock. There he came to know Sophie Krüger, the woman who was laterto become his wife. Soon after the end of theFranco-Prussian War, Piperwent toStrasbourginAlsacewhere he became the editor of theNiederrheinischenKurier("Lower Rhine Courier"). Later he was the editor ofnewspapers in Trier and Düsseldorf, before returning toMecklenburgin 1879. From 1879 to 1889 he was the mayorofPenzlin. Afterwards he settled in Konstanz onLake Constanceand, in 1893, moved to Munich. His mainwork,Burgenkunde("Castle Architecture" 1895) isstill one of the standard works on German castle research, a discipline knowngenerally in German asBurgenkundeafter his book. His greatrival wasBodo Ebhardt, the other well known Germancastle researcher at the turn of the century. Piper accused Ebhardt, forexample, of opportunism, when he rebuilt the Kaiser'sChâteau du Haut-KœnigsbourginAlsacein 1902 and, contrary to his own scientificfindings, made several unhistoric changes in order to satisfy the taste of hisimperial client. Otto Piper had three children, including the publisher,Reinhard Piper. He died on 23 February 1921 in Munich.
