DESCRIPTION:Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely fantastic and very rare, most likely early to mid 19th centuryItalianantique hand-painted tole serving tray, which looks to have been repainted over an already decorated, earlier tole tray. The painted oval medallion in the middle of the oval tray is itself in an oval format and features non other than Napoleon at Marengo, Italy, taken from and copied from the famous image of Napoleon on his favorite white horse, receiving battlefield updates or giving orders to a mounted French officer to his immediate left, with another mounted French officer to his right and aFrenchartilleryman next to a cannon with columns ofFrenchsoldiers in the background and plumes of smoke rising from the battlefield. During theNapoleonicWars, the Battle of Marengo, Italy, whereFranceunderNapoleonsquared off against the Austrians, was one ofNapoleon'sfirst major and pivotal victories in his conquest of Europe against the entrenched, old-guard, gildedEuropean aristocracy. This was an oft-copied image as a result ofNapoleon'ssuccess on the battlefield of Marengo,Italy, which showed his military genius, his tenacity and refusal to be beaten. It was actually in Marengo,Italyin 1800, whereNapoleondemonstrated to the entire world and to the absolute dismay and horror of the European aristocratic establishment, that he was a quite capable military strategist and became at that very moment, a veritable and undeniable existential threat to their very existence. It was shortly after this military victory over the Austrians at Marengo,Italyin whichNapoleondeclared himself Emperor ofItaly. Marengo,Italyand 1800 were pivotal, earth-shattering times and places for the trajectory of European history. This early to mid-19th century Italian antique tole serving tray, pays homage to this incredibly important and significant historical event which took place on the battlefield of Marengo, Italy in 1800. Absolutely outstanding. The painting is unsigned but shows real artistic agility and academic preparation. The work is well realized and only suffers a few minor scuffs and abrasions to its surface. Recently discovered, exhilarating and absolutely fresh to the marketplace. Very rare.CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
