Rare Buhl & Sons Michigan Style Bit Axe - All Original. Dimensions: approx. 4 1/4 inch bit, 3 inch poll, 28 inches long overall. Head has some restoration on the poll (see photos). Original handle shows some age and has been cleaned but not refinished--it could be stained or oiled by the buyer, if desired. Great opportunity for serious collectors.
Chistian Buhl (1812 - 1894) & Theodore Buhl (1884 - 1907) descended from the Buhl family of Michigan. The family was one of the leading industrial and commercial families of the last two centuries in America. The Buhl family success in the iron and steel manufacturing industry brought about enormous growth in their hardware business. The hardware business, Buhl & Sons Company, was located in buildings located at 120-234 Adair Street, Detroit, Michigan. The main warehouse was actually designed in 1919 by John Scott, a prominent Detroit architect. The company sold a wide variety of hardware, tools, and industrial supplies up until the early 1960’s. Like other hardware companies of the era, Buhl contracted with one of the large axe manufacturers for a limited number of axes and hatchets with thier own trademark cast into the head. These were then sold throughout Michigan and the ajoining states like other larger hardware companies such as Belknap Hardware Company in Louisville, KY, and Shapleigh Hardware in St. Louis, MO.
