Rare holy picture “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” 19th century Embroidery image surrounded by angel figures and dried edelweiss flowers with fern leaves In the glazed frame 49 x 40 cm The Blessed Mother wears a shiny dark blue robe with a star on the head veil; this is surrounded by the halo. The Greek abbreviations "MP" and "ΘY" for the words "mother" and "god" on either side identify her as "Mother of God" (Μήτηρ Θεού). On her left arm she carries the baby Jesus, dressed in green and gold. The child's head is surrounded by a cross halo, to the right is the abbreviation "IC-XC" for the name "Jesus Christ" (Ἰησοῦς Xριστός). The child is held by the mother's left hand and grasps her right with both hands. His head is turned away, however, and the gaze shifts to the cross that the Archangel Gabriel is carrying. As if through a movement of anticipatory shock, the sandal has come loose from one foot and falls to the ground. Angels hover on either side of the head of Mary, carrying the instruments of Christ's suffering in veiled hands. They too are identified by Greek letters as the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.
