Offering aone-page 4 7/8 x 6 1/5, n.d., n.p., autograph quote signed by WENDELL PHILIPS(1811-1894) referencing JOHN BROWN (1800--1859). “Count that day lost whose low descending sunsees at thy hand No worthy action done. These old lines John Brown of Harper’sFerry, taught to each of his children. Wendell Phillips” Comes with a handsomeengraving of Phillips featuring his facsimile signature.

The quoteperfectly aligns with how sympathetic contemporaries viewed Brown – as azealous man of action. It is no surprise that these same words inspired Brown’sfellow abolitionist, Wendell Phillips, who held up Brown as a martyr of theabolitionist cause. Even though Brown did not succeed in his attempt to capturethe federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia) in mid-October1859, he tried to complete in his mind, “a worthy action.” These lines wereevidently persuasive to Brown’s children as well, three of whom (Watson, Oliverand Owen) joined their father at Harpers Ferry. After Brown’s death, Phillipslobbied unsuccessfully to have Brown buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery inCambridge, MA, in the hope it would galvanize abolitionists there.

JOHNBROWN planned and led a raid with some of his supporters on the federal arsenalat Harpers Ferry, seeking to start an insurrection against slavery. Had it beensuccessful, Brown’s plan was to use the weapons seized during the raid to arm arebellion against the United States.Brown’s raid failed and he was hanged. Many, including Phillips, mourned the death of Brown.

WENDELLPhillips, an attorney, witnessed from his office on Court Street in Boston as amob searched for abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. The mob was angered byGarrison’s abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator, and by the abolition meetingscheduled for later in the day at the headquarters of the Female Anti-SlaverySociety on Washington Street. Many cite this day as the spark for Phillips’abolitionist work. Soon after this event, Phillips gave up his law practice anddevoted himself to the abolitionist cause.

Toning, folds. Else excellent and a great example of abolitionist history.
