This letter is in very good condition.

The letter is dated March 5, 1896. Itis

addressedto \"Dear Haynes\".

This wasHenry Williamson Haynes (1831-1912).

Haynes studied law at Harvard, and practiced

lawin Boston. He was professor of Greek and

Latinat the University of Vermont (1867-1873).

From1873 to 1879, he studied archaeology in

Europeand Egypt. He then returned to Boston,

In the letter, Winthrop refers at some length

to a man who is only identified as \"C. F. A.\"

I believe that this man was probably Charles

Francis Adams Jr. (1835-1915),a member

of the very prominent Adams family of

Massachusetts who was an author, historian,

and railroad and park commissioner.

Adams served as the president of the

Union Pacific Railroad from 1884 to 1890.

He served as a colonel in the Union Army

during the American Civil War. After the war,

he was a railroad regulator and executive,

an author of historical works, and a member

of the Massachusetts Park Commission.
