SNCC Martin Luther King ACT 1966 James Bevel Lawrence Landy Militant Group P1636:
$399.00

DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by ACT, a militant Chicago based Black Civil Rights Movement organization led by Lawrence Landy and James Bevel. The group worked with the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to organize Dr Martin Luther King's speech at Soldier Fieldon July 10, 1966 as well as coordinating the subsequent Chicago Freedom protests by SNCC.

BACKGROUND:During much of the early 1960's LawrenceLandry was an activist in the Civil Rights Movement inChicago. While attendingthe University of Chicago, he becamethe head of the Chicago Area Friends of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and worked to organize student sit-ins, boycotts and protestmarches throughout Illinois. He was the principal organizer of the 1963 Freedom Day school boycott. By1965 however, Landy, like many SNCCmembers, became frustrated bythe Southern Christian Leadership Council (SCLC) for failing to push the movement toward more aggressive tactics and strategies. In 1966, along with James Bevel, he formed ACT (not an acronym) to push for a far more militant and radical approach to attaining greater civil rights for African Americans in Chicago.Thoughmany of their members were alsoSNCC members,ACT allowed Landy and Bevel and their followers to better organize afarmoreaggressiveapproach to attaining their goals without interference from SCLC leadership. Though the group was in existence for a relatively short period of time, theyalong with their SNCC brethren, were instrumental for attaining many of the successes of the Civil Rights Movement in Chicago during the latter half of the 1960's.
