EARLIEST CANADIAN TROOPSHIP POSTCARD OF WORLD WAR ONE

CONDITION: RARE photo postcard, published by the RED STAR LINE of Antwerp, Belgium. There are NO rips, tears, or age marks, and NO toning; small crease at bottom left corner tip (from photo corner?) and diagonal white line left of the ship\'s stern. Generally fine and rare condition.

WW1 HISTORY: \"Lapland\" (1908-1933 - 18,694 tons) was used by Belgium\'s Red Star Line on the Antwerp to New York route. She was loaned to the British Admiralty at the outbreak of the Great War on 4 August 1914, and converted to a troopship to carry British Empire troops from Canada to England.

Within a few short weeks, Canadian Expeditionary Force troops had been assembled, and allocated a troopship for England, to fight the War in Europe. They boarded the \"Lapland\" in a convoy of 32 ships, which departed on 3 October 1914 for England.

\"Lapland\" was in Column \"Z\"of the convoy, and was the largest ship in the convoy, carrying 2,328 troops of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Battalion, HQ 5th and 6th Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

The convoy was protected by 4 Cruisers, 1 Battle-cruiser, and 2 pre-Dreadnaught ships, and arrived in Devonport, England on 19 October 1914. After a refit in June 1917, \"Lapland\" was chartered to the British White Star Line, and completed nine more troopship voyages from Europe to New York.

This is the earliest known surviving Allied troopship postcard of World War One. Except for light (normal) edge wear, it is in exceptional and fine condition, with a clear and legible message from \"Alf\" to his girl \"Meg\" in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada.
