Not sure of tribal connection, was probably either Hopi or Navajo made.This kachina is part of a collection of my husband’s. His father ran trading posts on the Navajo Nation from approximately 1940 to 1960. Most are in good condition, except where noted. Most have artist’s names on the bottom, with the exception of one or two.
Mudhead, orKoyemsiin Hopi language, is the most popular katsina with the Hopi. They appear in all ceremonies. They are often tricksters or entertainers. They bring laughter, levity, and joy.. Well- made, no issues with this kachina. Body and head are in typical rust color, with black and white painted on arms, chest, legs, Tiny shells hang from leather straps and white fur trim is at the ankles neck, and around waist. A very well-done kachina, in very good condition. Impressive 18" height. Signed by artist: Nelson.
