GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER. A Civil War general and Indian fighter, Michigan-born George Armstrong Custer (1839–1876) distinguished himself as a cavalry commander earning the rank of brigadier general of volunteers at age 23. Following the Civil War, he became field commander of the 7th Cavalry and led troops in a number of engagements during the Indian Wars. Custer, together with all of the men under his immediate command, was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876.

Original carte-de-visite portrait of George Armstrong Custer in civilian clothing taken by Jose M. Mora in March 1876, three months before the Battle of Little Bighorn, in what would be his second-to-last studio session. The CDV is listed as K-149 in D. Mark Katz’s Custer in Photographs, titled “General Custer” on the mount, measures 4” by 2.5”, and in fine condition with only slight creasing to the bottom.

THIS RARELY ENCOUNTERED CDV WOULD BE THE SECOND-TO-LAST PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN OF CUSTER BEFORE HIS DEATH

Only a handful of this rarely encountered CDV of Custer have sold at sale, one of which sold for $3,107 at Heritage sales in June 2007.
