DETAILS: Original pinback button demanding the release of seven young Muslim men who were adherents of MalcolmX and arrested by the Baton Rouge police in theaftermath of the 1972 riots at Southern University. Measures 1 3/4" inches.Rare.
BACKGROUND: On January 11,1972, African American students attending Southern University began a peaceful campus demonstration demanding better living conditions and an end to persisting forms of racial segregationpracticed in the area. The response of the Governor was to send in a large contingent of National Guard soldiers along with local sheriffs to intimidatethe African American studentsand bring an end to the demonstrations. The paramilitary force was excessively hostile to the peaceful protesters. They initiated a riot when they began firing tear gas into the unarmed chanting crowd. Numerous students were injured. During the confusion two student protesters were murdered by gunfireas weretwo officers. The police claimed that a group of young Muslim students affiliated with Malcolm X, who were visiting the campus, had provoked the riot. The seven men were arrested and charged. Butthe courts later ruledthat their was no evidence whatsoever of their involvement.Though they were all eventually released all seven men were badly beaten and mistreated while incarcerated.
