There aremany legends about Amethyst. The deep purple gemstone has been prized as asymbol of power, love, wealth and protection over the ages. The most well knowcolours of Amethyst are purple and violet however, Amethyst can occur in manyother colour varieties including, pink and black and also many shades in between.Before the Amethyst mines in Brazil were discovered in the 1800?s, Amethyst wasregarded as the most valuable of all gems and it was considered as rare asrubies, emeralds and sapphires.

In Ancienttimes, the colour purple signified power and royalty and cardinal status. Onlyroyalty, nobility and the clergy were able to wear it. The British royal crownjewels feature a collection of Amethyst gems to this day.

The nameAmethyst is derived from the Koine Greek word Amethystas which means notdrunken or to intoxicate. This is a reference to the belief that the ancientGreeks believed that the stone could prevent them from alcohol intoxication.They used Amethyst gems in goblets as well as jewellery.

The Ancient Egyptians believed Amethyst protected themagainst negativity and feelings of guilt and fear. Amethyst gems have beenfound in many royal Egyptian tombs including that of King Tutankhamen.

Amethyst was considered by the ancients to be the mostspiritual of gems. It is excellent to have in a room setting where you may wishto meditate or spend time in contemplation.

Geology: Amethyst is a variety of Quartz formed in the Earthfrom a combination of minerals, extreme heat and water, over 130 million yearsago. It is found inside pyrogenic volcanic rockscommonly known as Basalts. Amethyst forms in fissures of volcanic rocks where there was once veryhot volcanic lava, (50-250°c) silicaenriched water, trace amounts (10-100ppm) of ferric iron (Fe3+).
