About this Pipe:

I’ve had a thousand pipes come and go over the past few years and this is among my all time favorites.

I got this for myself and I’ve had it for a while now but I I’ve been smoking 2 Meerschaum pipes quite a bit lately trying to color them up and didn’t need an additional piece in my rotation. This is too nice for just sitting in a box.

The Savinelli 510KS is one of the finest Bulldog designs made in my opinion. Only a couple others I truly love by Kaywoodie and Dunhill that pop into mind.

As said, personally I find this to be a near perfect pipe in shape, grain, color and so on. I have had too many to count over the years and I’m amazed by this one. It is pristine and brand new in a beautiful display case and a sock shaped.. like a sock.

I’ll let the photographs do the talking and a quick video as well. I only wish I could take better quality pictures but it’s just my phone and basic lighting.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Punto Oro line, I suggest you read up on them but they’re among the very best of Savinelli, designated by the gold dot on the stem, hence the name.

This classic, group 4 size Bulldog is a piece to be admired and enjoyed.

About me:

I obsess over pipes ever since the bug bit. Life has me caring for my wonderful son full time at home and all of his needs. Restoring pipes has brought back a feeling of accomplishment and keeps my hands busy, which I have always needed. It certainly is not a profitable business but I love the entire hobby from making and restoring pipes to smoking them. We live in Southern… almost Central California. I started this to help raise some money for activities he loves like Equine therapy.

I go by the golden rule, from packaging to product.

If you’re unhappy for any reason, you can return it (buyer pays shipping in these cases) within 2 weeks of arrival to you for a full refund (less shipping) provided it hasn’t been smoked or damaged. It must be in the exact same condition as it it left me and the photos here.

I ship within 1-3 business days. I will always try to ship the next day. However, certain times can be very busy. If you are in a rush for it, let me know and I’ll make it a priority to get it out ASAP. If a pipe is purchased on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it will be shipped out Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Any duties, taxes or other fees outside of the purchase cost here are not my responsibility. This is usually only in the rare international purchase.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN A TYPICAL RESTORATION?

Well, they vary a lot. There’s far more to it or sometimes, not nearly as much needed. No matter the pipe, there’s usually over an hour or 2 of work into it, just in vetting, cleaning off old wax, dirt and cake and applying new multi-layered carnauba wax. Unsmoked pipes receive this most of the time including getting rid of any micro scratches on stem from factory.

Over the years, I’ve spent a small fortune on purchasing and trying different tools, materials and other items for the best results. I’ve made specialized tools myself and have my own methods that work to the advantage of the pipe. There are countless hours and time invested into this but I do love doing it, even if it pays less than an entry level job. :) It certainly isn’t for the money.

Restored pipes have been meticulously attended to and are in excellent condition. Each detail of the pipe has been gone over. Every pipe is different and requires more or less attention or other needs, while some simply need a thorough cleaning, buff and wax. Nearly every pipe has at least an hour or two of time put into it with many having several hours to make it as nice as possible.

The stem is a very important part of every pipe that should be attended to. After all, it is what has direct contact with you and a small blemish or excessive oxidation can be felt and stand out. Even new pipes have micro scratches and other imperfections from the factory.

In almost all cases, the stem is restored by hand, treated with Obsidian Stem Oil for UV protection to slow down and prevent oxidation, and then buffed and waxed with a commercial level buffer and wheels specific to the needs. The result is a shiny, piano black and smooth as glass stem.

In a bit more detail: as needed, the stem is carefully and conservatively resurfaced (every facet including all angles of the button) wet sanded to a high grit while retaining as much material as possible for strength. In rare occasions, stems may require additional material. If this is done, it is stated in the ad but as a rule, I don’t buy pipes that require that due to the extra time needed unless it’s a special piece worth the time and effort. (As is, I charge less than min. wage for the time I put into these pipes vs what I charge.)

My goal is to keep the stem and pipe as close to original as possible and bring back the beauty hidden under years of enjoyment or sitting.

I clean, hand polish and buff any materials such as metal or other adornments. I will leave it with a satin finish but I can bring stingers and other metals to a mirror polish by request.

If it is a screw-in joint that isn’t adjustable, I will align the stem so it lines up perfectly straight and true with the stummel when screwed in all the way. I’m happy to assist you with directions how to do this if you need as well. (please note that many brands with screw-in stems have the stem stop just short of perfectly aligned with the knowledge there will be some give over time and it will then line up. This is particularly the case with square / diamond shanks like Bulldogs.

With estate pipes that have good use and are well seasoned or have sat a very long time, I gently buff off any old material that builds up such as old wax, dirt, smoke related, carbon etc. and may use a fine grit abrasive to remove the very thinnest bit of briar bringing back the original stain and grain. I can re-stain an entire pipe as well.

The chamber is reamed and smoothed out and all the internals are viewed with a flashlight and inspected for burn-out or other flaws before moving on. I have special tools to clean caked up stems and airways. I sometimes cannot clean each pipe internally to a pristine condition as it can be time consuming and is something every pipe smoker can do. I want to put my skills into what most cannot do. I do clean the pipes quite well, but I leave it to each buyer to clean to their standards. All stems are sanitized before shipping too. If any remaining taste or odor of alcohol is present, it will aoffere within a couple bowls of smoking.
