DETAILS:Wonderfully inspiring cabinet card photograph of a group ofyoung suffragette and gay women dressed as men. Circa 1917.We believe the women were students attending Elmira Women\'s College, a private women\'s college locatednorth of New York City. We have researched the photographer George B. Nicewonger\'s stamp on the verso and were able to positively date it to between 1917-1918, when he operated a studio near the college inElmira NY.

BACKGROUND: Elmira College was founded as a privatecollege for women in 1855, it is the oldest existing college granting degrees to women that were the equivalent of those given to men. Since it\'s founding, it has been known as an academic institution whose faculty and staffwere strong proponents, organizers and leaders of the American Suffragette Movement.
