\"Captain Thomas Coram, horrified at the plight of unwanted children abandoned in the streets of London, established the Foundling Hospital in 1739. In this philanthropic venture, he was supported by his friendWilliam Hogarth, who offered paintings to hang on the walls of the new institution and encouraged his fellow artiststo make donations. The hope was that the wealthy would then flock to see the pictures, and take pity onthe foundlings. Hogarth’s plan proved a great success, and Captain Coram soon collected works by theleading British artists of the day, as well notable foreigners such as Andrea Casali and John Rysbrack. Thus, the Foundling Hospital was effectively the country’s first public gallery, predating Dulwich PictureGallery (1813) and the National Gallery (1824). Musicians, as well as artists, also offered their support.Handel composed a special anthem, performed concerts, donated an organ and bequeathed his copy ofthe Messiah.\" -- The Art Newspaper

William Hogarth (1697 -1764)was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, andeditorial cartoonist. His work ranges from realistic portraiture to comicstrip-like series of pictures called \"modern moral subjects.\" He isbest known for his series A Harlot\'s Progress, A Rake\'s Progress and MarriageA-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical politicalillustrations in this style are often referred to as \"Hogarthian\".

Hogarth was born in Londonto a lower-middle-class family. In his youth he took up an apprenticeship withan engraver, but did not complete the apprenticeship.Influenced by French andItalian painting and engraving, Hogarth\'s works are mostly satiricalcaricatures, sometimes bawdily sexual. They became widely popular andmass-produced via prints in his lifetime, and he was by far the mostsignificant English artist of his generation.

I will send a combined invoice reflecting your savings. The Nature of Prints & Engravings: It was not until the 20th century that prints were commonly produced for the print itself. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
