Timuel Dixon Black (1918 – 2021) was an African American educator and among the most important civil rights leaders in the Midwestern United States during the Civil Rights Movement. A native of Alabama, Black was raised in Chicago, Illinois. While working as a teacher, Black also toiled as a community leader actively organizing African American youth in the South Side of Chicago to protest for the end of segregation.In 1960 he led the Wade-In protests at Rainbow Beach to bring an end to segregation in Illinois public beaches. He was a senior leader in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\'s Chicago Freedom Movement from 1965 - 1966. He would later go on to become the Illinois chair of the Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE) and a senior member of the National Association for The Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Black was part of a coalition of Black Chicagoans which worked to elect Chicago\'s first African–American mayor, Harold Washington in 1983, and he mentored a young Barack Obama, the future U.S. president, on building a political base on Chicago\'s South Side.
