William Breathitt Gray was born in 1847. He was the son of James Daniel Gray and Levicy Rena (Fowler) Gray. [1] In the 1860 census, William Gray (age 13), attending school, was with his parents and siblings in Osceola, St. Clair, Missouri.[2]

He went out west after the Civil War and worked as an axeman in Redwood timber in California, earning money for an education. Attended the state normal school (teacher's college), then taught school in California and Oregon. One year in the dairy business in Oregon. Took a herd of sheep from Oregon to Montana. Settled in the Judith Basin.

He married Mary Jane "Mollie" Draper of Chestnut Mound, Tennessee, on 15 Dec. 1885. Traveled there to meet her after corresponding for some time. Stayed with her family for two weeks, during which time they were married, then he brought her back to Utica.

He became a leading citizen of Utica, building a store with a dance hall on the second floor, a hotel, and a saloon. He is pictured in Charles M. Russell's painting, "A Quiet Day in Utica".

Breathilt, retired Teacher, married, son of James Gray and Lavisa Fowler, died (age 68) on 17 June 1915 in Utica, Fergus, Montana. Mary T Gray was the informant.[3] He was buried next to his wife in Utica Cemetery, Judith Basin County, Montana, United States.

Utica is an unincorporated community in west-central Judith Basin County, Montana, United States. It is approximately 40 miles (64 km) from Lewistown[3] at the intersections of Pig Eye Road, Montana Route 239 (the "Utica highway"), and Montana Route 541. Yogo sapphires were found near Utica in the mid-1890s.[4]

Judith River Ranger Station is near town. The town itself now consists only of a church and a museum, plus a few houses.

Notable residents

A Quiet Day In Utica by C.M. Russell

One of Utica's most famous local residents was the western painter C.M. Russell, who at the time was a young cowhand hired by a local rancher and gold miner named Jake Hoover.[5] Russell stated that he learned most of his frontier skills from Hoover,[6] and the two men remained lifelong friends.[5] He featured Utica in the 1907 painting A Quiet Day In Utica,[7][8] which was originally known as Tinning a Dog. Hoover; local businesswoman Mollie Ringold, a former slave;[9] store owner Charles Lehman and Russell himself are all depicted in the painting, seen standing between the hitching post and door of the general store.[8][10][11]
