D445 Battalion – Viet Cong – 445thNLF Battalion - 275th Regiment - Long Tan - Phuoc Tuy

The 445thBattalion (D445 for short), also known as the D445 Provincial Mobile Battalionor the Ba Ria Battalion, was a Local Force battalion of the Viet Cong (VC)during the Vietnam War.

The battalionoperated in the Dong Nai river basin and also the Bien Hoa, Phuoc Tuy and LongKhanh provinces.

It recruitedprincipally from Dat Do, Long Dien and Hoa Long.

The battalionwas formed on 19 May 1965. It consisted of three rifle companies and oneweapons company with a total strength of approximately 350 men and wascommanded by Bui Quang Chanh aka Sau Chanh.

The battalionfought initially against the 173rd Airborne Brigade between 24 May and 4 June1966 during Operation Hardihood. American casualties during that operation were23 killed and 160 wounded and 48 VC soldiers were reported to have been killed.

During theBattle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966 the battalion fought against AustralianArmy forces from D Company, 6 RAR supported by New Zealand and US artillery.

According tothe D445 Battalion political officer, the unit provided \"guides for theunits that mortared the Task Force\" at Nui Dat base on 17 August 1966.

A VC medic,Chung, reported that three of the VC RCL detachment were killed in theAustralian counter-battery fire and were buried nearby.

During thebattle D445 Battalion supported the VC 275th Regiment, which included aPeople\'s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) battalion, by attempting to outflank theAustralians to the south.

Meanwhile, an80-strong Vo Thi Sau civil labour company commanded by Chin Phuong, comprisingmainly women and children, lent support by evacuating the casualties.

Australianveterans and historians, in the main, claim that at Long Tan D445 Battalionsuffered heavy casualties, with captured personnel reportedly later statingthat D445 Battalion\'s casualties had been 70 killed and 100 wounded, orapproximately 50 percent of its strength.

The totalnumber of PAVN/VC dead in the battle, according to VC and PAVN histories were47 killed.

Only onemember of D445 was captured at Long Tan (reportedly a 57 mm RCL gunner); andtwo members of 275th Regiment were captured who declared themselves to bemembers of \"Doan 45\" as their cover story.

During theretreat, Nguyen Duc Thu, the commander of D445\'s rear guard force, wasseriously wounded by a bullet that passed through one ear lobe and went out theother and Tran Van Chien, and the commander of the 1st Company were killed.

Several D445soldiers were awarded Letters of Appreciation (Giay Khen) for their actions inthe battle at Long Tan including Dao Van Trung (section 2IC 2nd Company), TranVan Tranh (section 2IC 2nd Company), Pham Van Duong (2nd Company).

One AustralianM113 Armoured Personnel Carrier was hit by two rounds from a D445 recoillessrifle detachment, killing the driver and wounding the crew commander andseveral soldiers.

However, VCcasualty figures of Long Tan were always difficult to account for as thebattlefield was continuously bombarded by the New Zealand and US artilleryduring the fighting and in the aftermath hundreds of VC fighters could never beidentified. D445 Battalion and the main combat force from the 275th Regimentthat attacked the Australians numbered some 2,500 fighters.

In 1968 asecond local force unit was formed in Phuoc Tuy, known as the D440 Battalion. The unit generally performed poorly against Australian and New Zealand forceshowever, and was eventually disbanded in August 1970 with most of its personneltransferred to D445 Battalion.

Until 1971D445 Battalion would fight mainly with the Australian and New Zealand forcesoperating in Phuoc Tuy Province from their base at Nui Dat. A major loss to theBattalion was the discovery and destruction of the Mây Tào Mountain Base in NuiMây Tào, including the battalion\'s field hospital and pharmacy in December1969.

WhenAustralian troops began to withdraw in 1971 D445 Battalion was able to regainstrength by taking advantage of the reducing strength of anti-communist forces.

By mid 1971 the1st Australian Task Force had been reduced to just two battalions and supportarms, including one Australian battalion—3RAR— and a combined Australian andNew Zealand battalion—4RAR/NZ. Australian and New Zealand combat forces werewithdrawn in December 1971.

In September1979, the battalion was involved in operations against armed FULRO guerrillasin the Chua Chan Mountain/La Nga River area of Xuân Lộc District that wereseeking independence for ethnic minorities in Vietnam and Cambodia.

On 23 February2011, at a formal meeting to discuss arrangements for a memorial for D445 bysurviving veterans and government officials, it was stated that during the warthe battalion \"had wiped out more than 10,000 enemy soldiers, destroyed120 military vehicles, shot down 20 aircraft, and seized more than 1,800weapons of different types. More than 1,000 cadre and soldiers of the battalionhad heroically sacrificed themselves.\"

  • NLF - National Liberation Front

The Việt Cộng, also known as the National Liberation Front(NLF), was a communist political organization with its own army – the People\'sLiberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam (PLAF) – in South Vietnam and Cambodiathat fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments, eventuallyemerging on the winning side.

It had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as anetwork of cadres who organized peasants in the territory it controlled. Manysoldiers were recruited in South Vietnam, but others were attached to thePeople\'s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), the regular North Vietnamese army.

During the war, communists and anti-war activists insistedthe Việt Cộng was an insurgency indigenous to the South, while the U.S. andSouth Vietnamese governments portrayed the group as a tool of Hanoi. Althoughthe terminology distinguishes northerners from the southerners, communistforces were under a single command structure set up in 1958.

North Vietnam established the National Liberation Front onDecember 20, 1960, to grow insurgency in the South. Many of the Việt Cộng\'score members were volunteer \"regroupees\", southern Việt Minh who hadresettled in the North after the Geneva Accord (1954).

Hanoi gave the regroupees military training and sent themback to the South along the Ho Chi Minh trail in the early 1960s.

The NLF called for southern Vietnamese to \"overthrowthe camouflaged colonial regime of the American imperialists\" and to make\"efforts toward the peaceful unification\".

The People\'s Liberation Armed Forces of South Vietnam(PLAF)\'s best-known action was the Tet Offensive, a massive assault on morethan 100 South Vietnamese urban centers in 1968, including an attack on theU.S. embassy in Saigon.

The offensive riveted the attention of the world\'s mediafor weeks, but also overextended the Việt Cộng. Later communist offensives wereconducted predominantly by the North Vietnamese. The organization was dissolvedin 1976 when North and South Vietnam were officially unified under a communistgovernment.
