Thisexceptional folk art plaque is relief carved into a heavy tropicalhardwood plank withpainted details,possibly a type of mahogany. It depicts Saint Francis who lived as ahermit and befriended birds and other wild creatures. His image isparticularly revered in the Hispanic Southwest, and this piece wasfound locally.

Online researching for the origin and artist ofthis carving, I used the keywords "Batista wood carving." Thesearch of images, I found three examples with the distinctive deep gouge carving thatsurroundsthe Saint in this piece. These three similar plaques were sold at artsale houses in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and were allsigned "Batista" in the same vertical format -- and created onvertically oriented wooden planks as well.Onecarving depicts Jesus, and the other twoexamples depict woodland-spiritfigures surrounded by tropical foliage, implying theartist had some Native American roots.

Thispiece is very appealing with a wonderful primitive quality and ishighly suitable for display in both interior and protected outdoorsettings.

Condition: Very good with no structural damage. The painted surfaces havesome wear and in the lower areas of the piece there is loss to thevarnish or shellac coating on the Saint's clothing, revealing the richoriginal blue paint. There are also four filled holes that weredrilled for mounting some time in the past: onein the halo and threenear the base. Professionally restored.
