Caucasian man at center clearly holds the power in this sitting & likely business deal, his identity remains unknown. Most likely a Philadelphia politician or business man involved in either the importation of Native American crafts (which Wanamaker’s sold w/ zeal) or involved in the monument’s development.
Three chiefs wear ceremonial dress w/ peace medals & beadwork (including an extraordinary pair of raised hands detail). This should be identifiable to someone expert in the field.
Found w/ a related image in Wanamaker’s office in Philadelphia (*available in my other listings), when Joseph Dixon / Wanamaker Expeditions produced interest in building an ‘American Indian’ monument in NYC. Thirty chiefs were invited to help sell the idea, which resulted in a failed fund raiser.
8 x 10.25” board w/ significant damage to both mount & photograph. All condition issues show in the scan.
