do note! this is not pristine. it was stored in a stash of prints and other wall hangings of my mother recently found. this lithograph is in pretty good antique shape, though it has some puckering, but its life under glass has done it well. there are scratches to the black-painted wood frame. on the reverse, there is an ink spot. i am challenged in photographing stuff under glass. i have done my best, but you will see reflection in the glass. this is a neat advertising lihograph with high saturation colors for th california produced placentia oranges originating from, very appropriately, orange county california. from the story i was able to find below, this was a crate label. you can read more about his advertising design niche below. i think this one is quite rare as i have no come across one that is the same.neat moorish-inspired orange graphic art leveraging the popularity of oranges from valencia in southern spain (where there is centuries of moorish influence).Mbr />the article below speaks to the artistry of the color in the stone lithography used to create these. and this label definitely fits the bill.beautiful mountain background with orange groves more to the foreground, with some beautiful delectable oranges in the front. it then reads (see second-to-last image)

june 11, 2013by the 1920s, orange crate label art began to shift from naturalistic themes towards an emphasis on product advertisement. labels now listed the health benefits of the oranges, eye-catching designs, themes and innovative use of color. southern california growers began to band together to create cooperatives like the placentia mutual orange association and california fruit growers exchange. as the cooperatives became more recognizable, growers were encouraged to give up home-created labels for catchy titles and sharply defined images that are easily remembered by the consumer. the california fruit growers exchange (sunkist) also used theme labels to distinguish between the quality of several brands of oranges at a packing house. each brand received one of the superlatives: sunkist quality with the logo «fancy» or «choice».the final period of crate labels is the 1930s to 1950s. during this period, labels featured designs based on commercial art concepts. marketers and advertisers primarily used graphics to creatively grab the attention of the consumer to persuade them to buy the product.as crate label design evolved, so did the printing technology. orange crate labels were originally printed using stone lithography technology. the process for printing was a slow and highly-crafted profession requiring heavy stones, careful alignment, treated paper and a meticulous attention to detail. printers enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to create more intricately-designed labels and used a vast array of colors prepared from carefully ground inks. eventually stone lithography techniques were replaced by photocomposition processes and offset printing in the early 20th century.the use of crate labels ended in the 1950s when cardboard boxes became much more cost effective than wooden ones. simple product identification printed on the box would also replace the need for a crate label. today orange crate labels are highly collectable ephemera and an excellent example of american graphic art.
