Robert Stevens Obituary

Robert W. "Bob" STEVENS Captain Robert W. Stevens at the controls of a Western Airlines DC-10, 1978 85, born May 22, 1918 Carp, Minnesota, died July 23, 2003 at Judson Park Health Center, Des Moines, Washington. He grew up in Crookston, Minnesota; graduating from Crookston High School 1936. While attending Hibbing Jr. college, Hibbing, Minnesota, he enrolled in the Civilian Pilot Training Program where he first learned to fly. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a private and was honorably discharged September 29, 1943. He eventually became a commercial airline pilot and spent most of his 34 year-long career flying all around Alaska, beginning July 18, 1946 as a DC-3 copilot for Pacific Northern Airlines where he was based and lived in Anchorage, Alaska. November 6, 1948, he married Elizabeth Layton, a stewardess for Pacific Northern Airlines. In 1953, they moved to Seattle, Washington where he continued to fly up to Alaska until retiring as a DC-10 Captain for Western Airlines May 22, 1978. He logged about 26,000 accident-free flight hours. After retirement, he continued his long-simmering love affair with Alaska; exploring, photographing and writing about the people, culture, wildlife and natural beauty of "The Last Frontier". In 1990, after 15 years of painstaking research and writing, he published a comprehensive two-volume set: ALASKAN AVIATION HISTORY 1897-1930. May 10, 1998, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, by the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in recognition of his many years of service to the Territory and State of Alaska, and for his preservation of it's rich, but vanishing, aviation history. He is survived by wife Elizabeth Stevens, daughter Nancy Brandner, sons Donald and Robert Stevens, grandchildren Mark, William, Jay, Heidi, Hanna, Katherine and David, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
